Landscaping Drainage
Landscaping drainage is an overlooked
area in landscaping which needs attention from the design stage itself. Apart from selecting the plants and other landscaping elements in your garden, the drainage of rainwater and other sources must be give attention.
A garden which accumulates pools of water where your kids should play looks bad and is a breeding ground for mosquitoes. This can be
unhygienic. That's why creating proper channels for the water to flow away must be
planned. A good landscape architect is the one who pays enough attention to this potential problem.
While designing the landscaping
drainage system always study the natural topography of the plot. If the plot is a hillside sloping ground then it is quite obvious that the water will flow below naturally exerting pressure on the boundary walls. A water collection reservoir at the lowest point that takes the water
outside the plot into the drainage lines of the local authorities can solve this
problem.
There is another aspect to this. Is is not always necessary to throw away the rainwater collected, you an use it for gardening purposes. Such kind of practices are termed as "rainwater harvesting" and can be very profitable in certain locations.
As said earlier studying the natural topography of land will help you to decide location
of various elements of garden with ease and the excess pressure on these system will get reduced. For example the cost of electricity to pump out the excess water will be greatly reduced if you study the natural flow of
excess water. Thus landscaping drainage becomes easy if you have a
carefully planned approach to gardening.
