Hillside Landscaping...
If you trying to do landscaping on a hillside or sloping ground then the biggest challenge you will face is retaining water for the plants that will grow on the slope. Because of gravity the water will always try to flow towards ground level and it will also take with it sand every time you water the plants. The only possible solution to this problem is constructing retaining walls and converting the slope into a stepped ground. the retaining wall is normally built using stones with horizontal courses. The stones used for this purpose are carefully selected so that they can easily rest on top of each other and create a solid and balanced structure. The wall is normally constructed with a little
tilt i.e. wider at the base and thinner at top, so that it can easily transfer
the load of the soil it retains on top. Naturally Sloping Land- Here is a picture of naturally sloping land before creating a terraced wall structure. As seen it is very easy to flow out all the sand from the slopes exposing plant roots.
Terrace Creation- This problem can be easily solved using retaining walls to create a terraces like arrangement to retain soil. This is like creating leveled ground for planting flowerbeds/shrubs at three levels. The height and the width of the retaining walls depends upon the nature and degree of the original natural slope. the steeper the slope the more will be the height of the retaining wall.
